Focus Northeast: Freeing the bamboo trade can galvanise the region

But first and foremost the government must stop treating the northeast in a step-motherly fashion and enact policies that are congruent with ground realities. Economically empowering the people of the northeast must be made a top priority. In this context, freeing up the bamboo trade is a much-needed policy initiative. In fact, as this goes to print, international bamboo stakeholders are meeting in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, to participate in the first Bamboo Global Summit.
Notwithstanding the last Interim Budget (2014-2015) allocating Rs 444 crore for marketing minor forest produce, bamboo, a crucial minor forest product, continues to be mired in complex policies. I spoke with Kamesh Salam, founder South Asia Bamboo Foundation and co-organiser of the Bamboo Global Summit, about how bamboo can galvanise the rural economy, especially in the northeast, and become an agent of economic empowerment.
