Flooded paddy fields
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: July 28 2015 -
From parched to flooded paddy fields and the insensitive officials turning a deaf ear to the cries of the helpless farmers - the scenario remains unchanged in Manipur.
But what should cause concern to the people with limited income is that within a matter of days price of rice will jack up and as a result of the market chain reactions all other consumer items shall become costlier.
It is an undeniable fact that vast paddy fields are now under water and the young plants will perish.
The panicky farmers have been urging the government to drain out the rain water by scooping out clogging rubbish from the drains near the paddy fields.
There is no response from the government although it will hit the people below the belt.
It is the duty of the government to clear obstructing rubbish from the drains without public pulling up the officials.
Till recently the farmers were concerned about the drought like situation since they could not plant anything in the parched field.
With the coming of rains they started growing paddy plants.
But they could never imagine that the incessant rains would flood the paddy fields and that the government shall remain as disinterested spectators.
The weather forecast is that there will be more heavy downpour in the coming weeks which means that the paddy fields will be flooded more.
It will hit the people and the state economy if there is low rice production.
With the kind of agitations the government is facing from all around it will have no time to drain out the stagnant water.
One kg of the local rice is sold at Rs 36 and it will become costlier if there is no good harvest in the coming days.
As the rains continue most the highways will have landslides which will dislocate transportation of consumer goods.
The government may have burning problems. But this does not mean that it could shirk basic responsibility to the people.
The Opposition members are also conspicuous by their deafening silence. The farmers have nobody to turn to.
