SHRI ELANGBAM SONAMANI SINGH

Shri Elangbam Sonamani Singh was born on 11 July, 1925 at Moirangkhom Loklaobung, Imphal.
The name of his father is Leiren Singh and mother is Laishram ningol Ibemhal Devi.
In his early years, Sonamani worked as a clerk but after receiving Master's degree from Calcutta University in 1952, he started his job as a history teacher at DM College in 1953.
Elangbam Sonamani retired as an IAS Officer in 1987. He served as a President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad from 1997-99.
He was also the executive member of Sahitya Akademi, Delhi.
Apart from being a well known writer of Manipuri literature, he is also a translator.
His short stories includes
Womkuda Shikar (1973),
Mangsat tanba (1978),
Mamangthong lollabadi maningthongda lakudana (1985);
Khand Kavya 'Daksh Yagya' (2000),
Novel 'Hajari' (1998).
Krishna Charit of Bankimchandra (2000) and Arabian Nights (2008) may be mentioned among his translation works.
He was awarded with many prestigious awards at state and national level for his notable works.
For his 'Mamangthong lollabadi maningthongda lakudana', the writer was conferred with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award, 1987 and Sahitya Akademi Award 1989.
He also was a receiver of Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti's Writers of the year 2001, Cultural Forum Manipur's Huirem Amuba and Yaimabi Award 2012, Arambam Ibungohal and Binodkumari Memorial Award 2018 and Gyangarima Maanad Alangkar Award 2017 by Bharatiya Gyanpith.
In recognition of his contribution in the field of Manipuri literature, Elangbam Sonamani was conferred with Sahityaratna by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal in its 83rd annual conference.
