Sahityaratna (Manipuri Literature)
Shree Elangbam Sonamani Singh was born on July 11, 1925 at Moirangkhom Loklaobung, Imphal.
He is the son of Leiren Singh and Laishram ningol Ibemhal Devi. Elangbam Sonamani begins his profession as a clerk.
Later on, he obtained MA degree from the prestigious Calcutta University and got the job of History lecturer at DM College in the year 1953.
He retired as an IAS officer in 1987. From 1997-99, he became the President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad as well as an executive member of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.
Elangbam Sonamani is also a well known translator.
Some of his well known short stories are
o Womku da Sikar(1973),
o Mangsat Taanba(19780),
o Mamangthong Lollabadi Maningthongda Lak-udana(1985),
o in Epic Poem Daksh Yagya(2000),
o novel Hazari(1998),
o in translation Bankimchandra's Krishna Charit(2000), and Arabian Nights(2008).
This well known writer and translator has been honoured with many national and international awards.
For his short story Mamangthong Lollabadi Maningthong da Lak-udana, Elangbam Sonamani has been honoured with Manipur State Kala Academy Award in 1987, and Sahitya Akademi Award(1989), as well as Writers of the Year 2001 by Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti, Huirem Amuba and Yaimabi Award 2012 by Cultural Forum Manipur, Arambam Ibungohal and Binodkumari Memorial Award 2018 and Gyangarima Manad Alangkar Award 2017 by Bharatiya Gyanpith may be mentioned.
In recognition of his contribution in the field of Manipuri Literature, Elangbam Sonamani has been conferred with the title 'Sahityaratna' on the 83rd annual conference of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad.
