Economic Blockades Pounded Manipuris in 2011

Manipur was witness to its worst-ever economic blockades in 2011 as the over 100 days of stir sent prices of essential commodities skyrocketing though the year saw a dip in militancy-related incidents.
'Iron lady' Irom Sharmila's hunger strike demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act entered the 11th year with the frail lady's resolve as strong as ever.
Though Sharmila got the support of many people last year, it failed to impress upon the government which is yet to come out with a clear stand on the AFSPA, the repeal of which has also been demanded by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Two MLAs -- Wungnaoshing Keishing (independent) and D D Thaisie (Congress and minister of education) -- were attacked in April and November by suspected Naga militants. In the Keishing ambush case, seven security men died. Keishing also died some weeks ago due to illness.
