East Timor President Inauguration: India Licypriya Kangujam invited
Licypriya accepted East Timor invitation as Special Guest of Honour for the President’s Inauguration.
: In a highly diplomatic move, 10 years old Indian Climate and Environmental Activist from Manipur Licypriya Kangujam has invited by the Asia’s youngest nation East Timor to the inauguration of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr Jose Ramos Horta as the new President on 20th May. The day will also mark the 20th Anniversary of the Independence of East Timor.
This is thought to be the first time an Indian young leader has been invited to such a high level event. Other leaders from the world are also on the guest list. Atleast 5 head of the states (President & Prime Ministers) and 50 ministerial representatives from various Government of the World has been confirmed to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
But analysts say Ms Kangujam's inclusion is of special significance given to strengthen relations between East Timor and India in terms of mitigating climate change. East Timor is highly vulnerable to climate change with sea level rising, frequent floods, cyclones, droughts, landslides and soil erosion.
Licypriya told the media before departure to East Timor at the Indira Gandhi International Airport that, “I’m really very surprised when a country invited a small kid like me to such a high level event. It’s really a big honour to my country. I am very excited to be there”.
“I will also address at the National Parliament of East Timor and also at the National University of East Timor during my visit. Many other civil society organizations of East Timor also invited me to interact with the children and young people to share my experiences. We will talk about peace and development and how can we fight climate change together”.
“Manipur even has a famous play “Gusmo ge Khudol” or “The Gift of Xanana Gusmao” based on their independence struggle and has close cultural ties between the people of East Timor and Manipur through this play by connecting heart to heart. I will also share the people about this play too. ”, she added. Nobel laureate Jose Ramos-Horta scored a landslide victory in East Timor's presidential election.
The 72-year-old secured 397,145 votes, or 62.09 percent, against incumbent Francisco "Lu-Olo" Guterres' 242,440, or 37.91 percent. East Timor’s first president, Xanana Gusmao, is backing Ramos-Horta in this election. The victory gives Ramos-Horta his second term in office. He served as president of Southeast Asia's youngest country from 2007 to 2012 and was also the country's first prime minister.
Dr Jose Ramos Horta was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for his efforts to bring a peaceful resolution to a guerrilla war in East Timor against Indonesia's occupation of the former Portuguese colony.
It can be noted that Licypriya has been championing her cause since six-years-old to protect, preserve and nurture our environment by fighting the climate change. She is one of the youngest climate activists globally and addressed the world leaders in the United Nations Climate Conference 2019 (COP25) in Madrid, Spain calling the world leaders to take immediate climate actions to save their future.
She is an outspoken young leader inspiring millions of people around the World and one of the leading voices for climate change in the World despite her young age.
