Down the Country Road
K. Radhakumar *
You know we the people
Born and brought up in the hills
Love walking and tracking in the morning.
I stop by a spring
After a long track in the hill.
Water
Cold and clear spring water
Collected in the palm of my cupped hands!
I quench my thirst
Before it disappears in no time:
It tastes sweet.
I try to get some rest -
I have to reach the peak
Before I get the sun.
You do not understand, my friend!
Life is spring water
In the palm of one’s cupped hands.
It just disappears
And no ghost haunts
The dark corridors of life.
I keep tossing and turning in the bed.
What is the noise?
The hands of the wall clock!
Dawn breaks
And it breaks far too soon for me.
The pain stabs at my heart.
How I wish I had a good night!
No material gains
No fame
No beauty that is skin-deep
But a Poem –
A poem from the depth of one's soul
A poem that transforms life.
