SHRI DONGKHOJAM LUNKIM
Akademi Award: Tribal Culture
Born in 1943 at Dongsum Village under Sadar Hills District and presently residing at New Lambulane, Imphal, Shri Dongkhojam Lunkim is a well-known artiste and guru of folk music of the Thadou Kuki tribe.
As a child he used to sit under the feet of his village elders to learn folk music.
An ardent student, he took no time in mastering the basics of tribal folk music.
As he grew up into an artiste, he became to be known as a folk instrumentalist.
With over four decades of experience, today he has become an accomplished guru of Thadou Kuki folk music with specialisation in Pengkul music and ‘Gosem’, a wind instrument akin to bagpipe.
Apart from music, he also carries the experience of more than two-decade-long exposure in the field of tribal dance and theatre.
He has been a part of various tribal cultural troupes that has given numerous performances at the state and at the national level.
He has also been honoured as ‘Grand Musician’ by Kuki Inpi, Manipur in 1992.
At present, he is occupied as Guru of Lamhil, an active cultural organisation of his tribe.
In recognition of his contribution in the field of tribal culture, Shri Dongkhojam Lukim is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
