Invitation to "Discussion on MHRD-University Ranking: Status of Manipur University"
Date - 15 April 2017
Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) is the platform of all faculty members of the university, which has always voiced the greater concerns of the teaching community of this university. It takes great responsibility and larger role to play in the field of higher education and research in this region. Since it represents a select conglomeration of the best academic minds of the state and beyond, it believes in the spirit of constructive criticism and the true spirit of questioning, leading to the healthy growth and development of the university in particular and higher education of this region in general.
With the above objectives in mind, MUTA is organizing an awareness program on "National Institutional Ranking Framework" (NIRF) which is introduced by HRD Ministry, Government of India, in the recent years. This ranking means an important index or parameter for giving more funding and grants, enhanced autonomy, freedom of functioning and other benefits, to the institute having higher rank in NIRF.
On last 3rd April, 2017, HRD Minister Sri Prakash Javadekar released NIRF list for the second time in its history and Manipur University is not found in the list within 100 for the second time. In the entire North-East region, Gauhati University (serial no. 43), Tezpur University (serial no. 48), NEHU (serial no. 77), Mizoram University (serial no. 94) etc. are included in the list within 100.
MUTA strongly feels that people of MANIPUR can perform well in three very important sectors – Arts and Culture, Sports and Education. In the field of Education, Manipur was always placed neck -to- neck with Assam in the past history before Manipur University was established in 1980. Many of our senior academicians were even toppers in Matriculation and Graduation examinations under Gauhati University at that time.
MUTA wishes that the present NIRF ranking accorded to Manipur University, may not be a true reflection of our society. Here lies a big gap in understanding the present scenario in higher education sector in Manipur. The university community therefore needs to offer an explanation to our society for this sorry state, and a strong commitment for bringing a better future. With this hope in mind, MUTA is organizing this informal and open discussion on this issue in order to increase the general awareness.
MUTA Executive Body requests all our faculty members to participate in this discussion and express their valuable opinions, with some constructive suggestions.
Venue: Senate Hall (Third floor, Earth Science Department), Time and Date: 2.30 p.m. on 15.4.2017
N. Nimai Singh
MUTA President.
