Devendro off to Almaty for Olympic build-up
Ritu Sejwal, TNN | Feb 14, 2012, 12.43AM IST :
Indian boxer L Devendro Singh(49kg), right now focusing on the London Olympics, is looking to build on the gains he made last year during which he not only upstaged favourite Amandeep Singh to make the World Championship team but also booked his Olympic berth.
The big-hearted boxer from Manipur told TOI: "During the World Championship where I lost in the quarterfinals, my coaches pointed out that I don't counterattack enough. I have worked on this weakness."
Devendro was undecided about taking part in the Almaty meet until last week but he was convinced by national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu to get some crucial match practice. "I was not prepared mentally for this tournament. But (Sandhu) Sir said it will help me in gaining some experience and confidence in the build-up to the Olympics," he said.
The coach said Jai Bhagwan wasn't picked due to a shoulder problem, while Manoj Kumar and Vikas Krishan are nursing hand injuries.
