Tribal Design Forum is India’s only community of designers and creative professionals from various tribes of India. The forum seeks to facilitate interactions with leading domain experts and creative professionals and organisations that work closely with indigenous communities and cultures, in India and around the world to provide greater exposure to the young creative youth from tribal communities in India and make them abreast with the leading trends, approaches and concepts in the world of art, design and culture. The forum does this online platform through regular interactions with some of the leading figures.
Till now, the forum has organized over a hundred such sessions and have been able to facilitate interactions with experts from countries like Australia, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala, San Salvador, Nigeria, Ghana, Norway, The Netherlands amongst others.
In their latest edition of these interactive sessions, The Tribal Design Forum will be organizing an interactive session with Naga supermodel Andrea Kevichusa to get an insight into the fashion and the Bollywood industry and provide audiences with an opportunity to understand the skills required to create a mark in the fashion and entertainment industry.
Another upcoming session is scheduled for the benefit of textile and fashion designers working closely with indigenous artisans and culture where the Tribal Design Forum is inviting one of the leading fashion designers from The Philippines who has created international benchmarks working with the indigenous artisans while ensuring livelihoods for the artisan communities. The forum hopes that young and aspiring designers who wish to work for the development of their indigenous cultures, crafts and artisans could get a better understanding to become successful through her approach.
And finally later in this month, The Tribal Design Forum will be organizing an interactive session with one of the world’s leading special effects and props design studio – Weta Workshop from New Zealand, to understand the creative process of bringing imagination to life through films, exhibition and immersive experiences.
Weta Workshop is a five time BAFTA award winner amongst many other awards and accolades and are best known for contributing props, weapons, costumes, vehicles, armour, miniatures, and much more to a variety of wonderful projects including Black Panther, Avatar, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit motion picture trilogies, Blade Runner 2049, Ghost in the Shell, Thunderbirds Are Go, and The Chronicles of Narnia – to name just a few.
One of the focus areas of the discussion with Weta Workshop will be to explore various approaches and possibilities of creating immersive and interactive land-based experiences that is able to effectively reflect the local cultures. This interaction might be a great way for the young designers to get an insight into methods, approaches and sensibilities that may be required to create effective and memorable experiences that represent local cultures.
According to Sudhir John Horo, convenor of Tribal Design Forum, “All of the sessions above are geared towards bringing the best of the art, design, fashion and entertainment case studies and enable the young designers from India and smaller regions like Manipur to get an opportunity to interact with some of the leading domain experts and learn from them and their professional experiences.
