Democracy trampled
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: June 03 2015 -
India which has been under monarchy for generations is not undoubtedly suited for democracy whose norms were practised after the adoption of the Constitution in 1950.
But it was never divined that goons, hirelings and anti-social elements would resort to political thuggery to make a mockery of the ADC polls on Monday.
While the state and the central paramilitary personnel were standing by as stumps men and women had a field day in tearing to shreds ballot papers, squirting indelible ink inside the ballot boxes, smashing and burning the snatched boxes.
It was also a short remove from killing that some Congress workers attacked the BJP president and his entourage near a polling station and one woman BJP activist was brutally manhandled by the candidate's wife.
It is for Gaikhangam to make a plausible and comprehensible explanation.
Okram Ibobi who has always made a tom tom of the "balanced development both in the hills and valley" ought to explain why there is no motorable road leading to 6 polling stations at Henglep with the result that pollings could not be held.
Manipur is much smaller than any district of Assam and the biter fact is that developmental fund for the hills had gone to private pockets.
To cut a long story short, the kind of thuggery and involvement of some armed groups are anathema to democratic practice.
When "pollings" in the captured booths were held one day in advance while the officials and security personnel looked the other way many questions remain unanswered.
If proper security steps are not taken up the doctored results will be announced ahead of June 10 to elect some shored up candidates and it is a national shame.
