NEFIS CRITICIZES THE PALTRY ATTEMPTS BY MANIPUR GOVT TO PROVIDE RELIEF TO PEOPLE AFFECTED BY TURMOIL IN MANIPUR!
DEMANDS THAT ALL MEASURES WHICH HAVE FUELED THE CURRENT TENSION SHOULD BE WITHDRAWN!
APPEALS TO ALL COMMUNITIES THAT THEY SHOULD TAKE A STEP BACK AND PUT FORTH ALL THE CONTENTIOUS ISSUES FOR DELIBERATION AND LARGER CONSULTATION THROUGH TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION!
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) criticizes the paltry attempts by the Manipur government to provide relief to the people affected during the present turmoil in the state. It should be noted that the government has announced a one-time measure of providing Rs. 1,000 to the people in the relief camps. This is too little and too late.
The need of the hour is to provide ex-gratia compensation to those who lost loved ones, suffered injuries, and loss of homes, grain, livestock, and so on. Moreover, an immediate relief package for the farmers, a one-time moratorium on loan and rent payments, and a general relief package for the affected areas should be ensured.
NEFIS demands that all measures which have fueled the current tension should be withdrawn, and all communities should take a step back and put forth all the contentious issues for deliberation and larger consultation. In this respect, a Truth and Reconciliation Commission should be established to ensure peace in the state so that people can safely return to their villages and rebuild their lives.
NEFIS also demands the resignation of the Chief Minister of Manipur and handing over of power to an interim all-party government comprising representatives from all communities. Moreover, the present Chief Minister and the members of those organizations who have indulged in violence should not be part of any peace process. Moreover, women should be given a prominent role in the peace process for it to remain meaningful.
