Crimson
Soibam Haripriya *
The sun sets giving way to night
the troops set in
the air tense with sweat
armed and unarmed become one
in the dust
On the day of endless nights
one by one we took up arms
anaesthesised by people's games
Crimson rivers and scarlet rains
swearing blood unto blood
and tears unto tears
while laughter closes in quickly on us
One by one they raped us
taking turns
barterred us with guns and bombs
Razing huts and planting bombs
Steel rains upon the valley and the hills
Grandchildren point guns at grandmothers
while the earth scorched by hatred wept at our feet
