The 43rd Annual Conference of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Assam was held at Manipuri Rajbari, Guwahati from 15th to 17th December, 2006.
The main attraction of the Conference was the Symposium on Ashangbam Minaketan held on the morning session of the 2nd day. A number of scholars discussed the life and work of the great Manipuri poet, writer, Dramatist, critic & Translator and recalled the enormous contributions made by the great literary figure in Manipuri Literature.
A Seminar was also held on the morning session of the 3rd Day where Dr. Rajmani Singh, Lecturer, Assam University, Silchar presented a paper on the socio-cultural relations between the Manipuris and the Kacharis of Barrak valley with reference to historical backgrounds.
In the afternoon session of the 2nd day, the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam honoured 32 eminent Manipuri scholars with various Upadhis for their contribution in the field of Manipuri Literature and Manipuri Culture including Manipuri Nritya and Lok Shangeet.
The heart rendering honour Ceremony was presided by Shri Ngariyanbam Nabadwip Singh, President of the Parishad and Shri Kutub Ahmed Mazumder, Hon'ble MLA, Sonai LAC was the Chief Guest, Shri R.K. Jitendrajit Singh, President, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Tripura, Shri Rajmani Nongthongba, President, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Meghalaya were the Guests of Honour.
The jam packed Manipuri Rajbari ground on the evening of 16th December was thrilled with laughter, sorrow, pride and deep thought with the varied taste of poems read out by about 50 renowned Mnaipuri poets and poetesses under the able moderator of Janab Kheiruddin Chaudhury who enhanced the beauty of each and every poem by his apt briefing.
The open Session of the Conference was opened at 14:00 hrs. on 17.12.06 by Shri Konak Sen Deka, President Axom Xahitya Xabha as the Chief Guest. Shri Dinesh Prasad Goala, Hon'ble Minister Revenue & Housing was the Special Guest and Prof. N. Sanajaoba, Dean of Law, Gauhati University and Shri B. Jayanta Kumar Sharma, President Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal were the Guests of Honour.
The renowned Manipuri Writer, Poet, Dramatist Shri M. Dev Singh, who is more popularly known as Subram was honoured with Leima Memorial Gold Medal for his Historical Novel, "Meera Mem Saheb". In his address, Shri Konak Sen Deka highlighted the importance of establishing relations amongst the different literary bodies of the region.
Shri Dinesh Prasad Goala, Hon'ble Minister, Urban Dev. & housing expressed his love and affection of the Manipuri communities and assured the Parishad to render his possible help to fulfill the present day needs. Prof. Sanajaoba appealed to the writers to pen about the poor and under developed communities of the region to establish peoples' integration.
Colourful Cultural programme highlighting the rich cultural heritage of India, Manipuri culture in particular, thrilled the crowd on the evenings of the 2nd & 3rd day.
