Condemns Committee's Highhandedness

The Global Manipur Federation (GMF) strongly condemns the recent curbing of residents' rights at the newly established prefabricated and renovated home for conflict victims located at the Sericulture Training Institute in Kwakta. A news report on TOM TV on November 3rd revealed restrictions on residents' ability to approach the media, undermining their fundamental right to freedom of expression.
During a visit by Moirang Congress MLA Shanti, a promise was made to address the needs of the home and its residents. Subsequently, a dedicated committee, chaired by MLA Shanti, was formed to ensure the welfare and requirements of the home. Committee member S. Ibungo made this announcement to the media.
Ibungo stated that the committee's primary responsibilities would include overseeing and facilitating various aspects of the home's operations, including attending to medical needs, providing transportation services for children to schools, and enhancing security arrangements.
While GMF welcomes these measures, which are essential for providing a safe and nurturing environment for the residents, it is appalled by the restriction of residents' rights to voice their concerns, share their stories, and communicate with the media. Such restrictions raise serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
GMF is also troubled by the use of the term "inmate" to describe the residents of the home. This term can be stigmatising and dehumanising, contravening the principles of dignity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
GMF urges everyone involved to talk openly and respectfully to protect the rights and dignity of the residents while also taking care of the home's needs and safety. It's crucial to find a balance that values the residents' well-being and basic human rights. Sincerely yours,
Media Team,
