Delhi Manipuri Society (DeMaS) expresses deep concern over the ongoing ethnic violence that erupted following a rally on May 3rd, 2023, in the hill districts of Manipur. The aftermath of the rally
has led to unwarranted attacks on innocent inhabitants in Churachandpur and surrounding areas, predominantly carried out by Kuki militants.
Tragically, these violent confrontations have caused severe damage to lives, properties, economic livelihoods, security, familial ties, social relations, hopes, ambitions, and the psychological well-being of countless individuals. Despite claims by the Government regarding security measures, DeMaS firmly asserts that armed attacks by Kuki militants persist in peripheral villages of the valley districts, leaving residents in a perpetual state of fear for their lives. Insufficient security arrangements have been made, leaving them to fend for themselves.
DeMaS urgently appeals to the Central and State Governments to provide essential security to vulnerable individuals residing in the foothills.
Furthermore, it has come to our attention that the Kuki community, with support from their armed militants, has illegally taken control of the two crucial National Highways in the state. This blockade
has rendered these roadways inaccessible to other communities, severely disrupting the supply of essential commodities and adversely impacting the daily lives of Manipur's citizens. DeMaS calls upon the Central and State Governments to take immediate action to regain control of the National Highways and remove these miscreants.
Delhi Manipuri Society, (DeMaS) would like to extend heartfelt commendations to the leaders, both from the state and non-state agencies, philanthropists, health workers, transporters, and individuals who are dedicating their time and labor to provide relief to victims in camps and other affected areas.
Their efforts are truly commendable and appreciated. It is crucial to emphasize that DeMaS stands for a peaceful Manipur, where all rightful citizens can coexist harmoniously. However, it is of utmost
importance to address the issue of illegal immigrants in the state and discourage their involvement in illicit activities such as poppy plantation, drug trade, and acts of terrorism.
By taking immediate and visible action from the Government and implementing comprehensive solutions, the way for a long-lasting and bright future for all genuine residents of Manipur could be paved.
President,
DeMaS
