Clearance delays hit power generation in Northeast
Seven Sisters Post | Guwahati (May 22):
Delays in granting environmental and forest clearance to 11 thermal and hydro power projects in the Northeastern region (NER) have stalled the progress of the planned power generation of more than 13,116 mega watt of power in the region, according to the union power ministry.
In fact Central Electricity Authority (CEA) had already approved the detailed projects report (DPR) of all these power projects but due to the delay in getting clearance from ministry of environment and forests (MOEF) all these projects have suffered time and cost overruns.
Case in point was Rs.1500 MW Tipaimukh being implemented by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation which has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Manipur government for the construction of Rs.3,000 crore dam in 2003 has not been able to obtain forest and environmental clearance from MOEF for last nine years.
