Centre to call NE forest ministers for crucial meet

As the unabated deforestation in the Northeast continues to violate the Supreme Court order of 1996, the Centre is likely to convene a meeting of all forest ministers of the region to find out a solution to the menace. According to the government sources, Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) took strong note of the recent Forest Survey of India (FSI) report which recorded a drastic decrease of 549 sq km of forest area in the Northeastern states in 2011.
Manipur registered the highest number of forest area downfall with 196 sq km. The state is, however, followed by Nagaland which loss of 146 sq km of its forest land. Assam also lost 19 sq km of forest land during the period.
Interestingly, the Parliamentary standing committee on environment and forests in its 2010-11 report also suggested for a policy to make it mandatory for public and private corporates to spend 50 per cent of fund available for corporate social responsibility for the massive afforestation in the country.
