Centre 'tired' of agreements with rebels
The Telegraph | Imphal, April 30:
The Union home ministry is tiring of the process of signing suspension of operations (SoO) agreements with Northeast rebels outfits. This was revealed here today by the ministry’s joint secretary in-charge of the Northeast, Shambhu Singh.
“We do not want to go on signing more SoO agreements with militant groups (of the Northeast). We want the militants to lay down weapons and come back to the national mainstream to lead a peaceful and normal life,” Singh told The Telegraph.
He said such agreements symbolised “mistrust” between the government and the outfits, which the former did not like. The official’s remark came after extensive experimentation with SoO pacts in Manipur, where agreements were signed with more than 20 small rebel groups, mostly belonging to the Kuki community, under two umbrella bodies — Kuki National Organisation and United Peoples Front.
