Centre suspends investment policy for industry-starved NE
Times of India | Prabin Kalita | TNN | Dec 4, 2014, 03.18 PM IST
In a death blow to the industrially and economically backward northeast, the Centre on Wednesday suspended the Northeast Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIP). The term of the 10-year policy ends in 2017.
The policy, implemented in the eight northeastern states, including Sikkim, was brought about by the previous UPA government in 2007 to encourage investments in the region. Several incentives were provided under the policy, including 100% excise duty exemption on finished products made in the region, 100% income tax exemption, capital investment subsidy at 30% of the investment in plant and machinery, interest subsidy at 3% on working capital loan.
