Central aid for North East handlooms
The Telegraph | Roopak Goswami | May 07, 2012
The Centre is making a grand effort to turn the Northeast handloom sector into a commercial one. Sources said the working group on the handloom sector, appointed by the Planning Commission for the Twelfth Plan, has recommended a new pilot scheme to upgrade domestic handloom units to minimum economic-sized commercial units.
According to the latest census (2009-10) in the Northeast, 90 per cent of the handloom workers’ households are weaver households. A large majority of looms in the northeastern states are engaged in domestic production (62 per cent) and a relatively less proportion is into mixed production (34 per cent). This is primarily because handloom weaving is part of the culture across all social groups.
“Hence, the need arises for a new scheme exclusively for the Northeast as the handloom sector in the region has high potential for growth and development. The objective of the pilot scheme is to provide a boost to the economy of the region by integrating the segregated efforts made till date and launching an entrepreneur- driven scheme to set up 302 minimum economic-size handloom units in two years,” the report said.
