Celebrations amid militant boycott call
The Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, Aug. 15:
Independence Day was celebrated in Manipur amid a general strike called by militant groups. The celebrations, however, were peaceful . Chief minister N. Biren Singh unfurled the Tricolour at the parade ground of the First Manipur Rifles ground here today. He also took the salute from more than 40 contingents.
Addressing the gathering, which was attended by ministers, MLAs and top-ranking government officials, Biren Singh said, "Being a part of an independent country, Manipur is making progress in the field of medical science and agriculture. But there are some areas that need to be developed." He stressed the importance of public and police cooperation for restoring peace in the state.
