The Caveman and the Children of the (19)70s
K. Radhakumar *
A man, semi-naked
And long haired to the naked eye,
Who lived in a cave
Thousands of years ago
Dreamt of
A very, very tall building.
He woke to a clear sky
And saw a whole day lay ahead.
Happiness sang inside him.
He went behind a rock
Why, it was the call of nature.
He came back
And stood at the mouth of the cave;
He thought of the place as his home.
Inside his children were crying.
'What are they crying for?', he asked.
'They are hungry', his wife replied.
Out he went
To gather fruits
And hunt wild animals and birds
For food.
He had no compunctions about the latter;
He had seen
Snakes were after frogs
And frogs had run for dear lives.
Twenty centuries passed.
We saw two boys playing
Among tourists sunbathing on the beach.
With sand, shingle and sea water
They constructed skyscrapers
And many beautiful things.
After sometime,
The children had a quarrel about something
Something nobody knew what
And destroyed everything they had constructed
Including the skyscrapers
And the destruction was faster than
The disappearance of the twin towers.
