Candlelight vigil at Delhi condemning killing of civilians in Nagaland
NEFIS ORGANIZES CANDLELIGHT VIGIL AT DELHI UNIVERSITY CONDEMNING THE KILLING OF CIVILIANS IN MON, NAGALAND!
DEMANDS IMMEDIATE REPEAL OF DRACONIAN AFSPA!
DEMANDS IMMEDIATE ARREST OF PERSONNEL INVOLVED IN THE CRIME!
SUPREME COURT SUPERVISED INQUIRY DEMANDED INTO THE CASE!
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) today organized a Candlelight Vigil at North Campus, Delhi University against the recent killings in Nagaland by the security forces. The programme was attended by many students from across the communities of the North East as well as progressive organizations.
It should be noted that two days back, the security forces personnel opened fire on a vehicle carrying coalmine workers in Oting village, Mon, Nagaland, allegedly taking them to be the personnel of a militant outfit. The brutal killing by the armed forces personnel has sparked outrage among the people, who have been seeing the impunity enjoyed by the security forces in the region as the prime cause of the killings.

Such incidents of killing civilians in the name of security measures have been a regular feature in the region. The impunity enjoyed by the armed forces under AFSPA has been used to strike terror into the population of the region, such that people are forced to live under constant fear of their lives.
NEFIS stands for protecting the democratic rights of the people and demands that all the personnel and officials responsible for the killings should be immediately arrested. Only by immediate action against the errant personnel can justice be ensured to the deceased civilians. Also, an inquiry should be conducted into the case supervised by the Supreme Court.
Above all, NEFIS also calls for demilitarization of the region and immediate repeal of the draconian law, AFSPA. The gathering pledged to intensify the movement against such killings in North-East in the coming days.
