Candle light vigil and public meeting at Delhi University
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) on 13th June participated in a Candle Light Vigil and Public Meeting at Delhi University calling for justice for all, peace, and communal harmony in Manipur. The present situation of conflict between communities is due to the role of the state government in causing animosity among different communities for cheap political motives.
The complete failure of the state institutions and the indifference of the state police to stop violence have led to the death of many people, the destruction of homes, and the displacement of people. In communal conflicts, it is the poor and labouring masses who suffer, and political profits are reaped by the ruling elites having vested interests.
In the meeting, NEFIS raised the demand for the resignation of the Chief Minister of Manipur and handing over of power to an interim all-party government comprising representatives from all communities.
NEFIS also demanded the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to ensure peace in the state so that people can safely return to their villages and rebuild their homes and lives.
Further, NEFIS demanded the provision of ex-gratia compensation to those who lost loved ones, suffered injuries, and loss of home, grain, livestock, and so on.
NEFIS also demanded that the present Chief Minister and the members of those organizations who have indulged in violence should not be part of any peace process. Moreover, women should be given a prominent role in the peace process for it to remain meaningful.
