Candle Light Vigil at DU over the lynching of two men in Assam on 11 June 2018
NEFIS ORGANIZES CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL AT DU OVER THE LYNCHING OF TWO MEN IN ASSAM!
APPEALS FOR PEACE AND HARMONY AMONG DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES IN ASSAM!
INDIVIDUALS FROM DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES OF NORTH-EAST PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAMME!
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) today organized a candle light vigil at North Campus, Delhi University along with Assam Students’ Association Delhi (ASAD) and other democratic organizations against the lynching of people recently in Karbi Anglong.
Individuals from different communities of North-East also participated in the programme. It should be noted that two men were lynched allegedly by local villagers in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on suspicion of being “child lifters”. Provocative rumors have been circulating on Social Media regarding the incident and deliberate attempts are being made by some vested interests to destroy social fabric of the region.

It should be known that the region is under-developed and the successive state governments have continued to ignore the conditions of the people of the region. There has been no integration of the people of different parts of the state with the region. Moreover, due to the present incident, a rift has appeared among different communities of the state.
The root cause of the present unfortunate incident is uneven development of different parts of the state. Such uneven development fuels hatred towards other communities and results in brutal backlashes such as the present incident. There have also been news of vigilante groups being active in the region. This points towards poor functioning of the police system as well as fallout of the absence of pro-people policies in the region.

NEFIS appeals to all communities of Assam to maintain solidarity in the present situation of communal rift and harmoniously reconcile their differences through dialogue. NEFIS also appeals to different community organizations to undertake confidence building measures aimed at building communal harmony among different communities.
NEFIS also demands that the government should clamp down on rumor mongering and seriously deal with vested interests wishing to destroy social fabric of the region.
