Cancellation of University of Hyderabad entrance exam test centre in Imphal
Date - September 24th, 2020
The dreaded ongoing pandemic has critically affected the lives of millions of people across the world. It has amplified many existing problems besides taking the lives of the people. The marginalized and the economically poor sections of the society have been especially hard hit by this pandemic and the lockdown that followed.
In this context, we, the students from Manipur in University of Hyderabad, would like to put forth the following issues to our Honourable State Education Minister and the concerned authorities for their kind perusal and swift action.
1. The entrance exam of the University of Hyderabad (formerly known as Hyderabad Central University, HCU) for the academic year 2020-2021 is starting from 24th of September, 2020 (Thursday). The test centre to be allotted in Imphal has been cancelled suddenly without any reason.
2. Many students from Manipur who had opted for Imphal as the test centre have to either go to Dimapur or Guwahati to write the said exam.
3. As many of them belong to OBC, ST and SC, they are in a distressful situation. It is unimaginable to go to another state during this pandemic in such a situation. They are left with no choice but to give up writing the exam. While all the other states in India have one or more test centres, it is unfair and an injustice to the students of Manipur aspiring for higher education to have the centre cancelled.
4. University of Hyderabad is among the top 10 Central Universities in India. Every year, many students from Manipur apply for this university and since 2016, the University has been allotting test centre in Manipur in an attempt to give fair chances to all the applicants irrespective of which states they are from.
5. Manipur has only one Central University (Manipur University) and it can accommodate only a few students out of the thousands passing out each year. Therefore, many passing students apply in other universities each year.
Many of them opt for University of Hyderabad because of its calm surrounding and comparatively better suited environment for the Northeast people in terms of racial discrimination that they face in the mainland India.
6. It would be in the interest of the state to arrange an entrance exam centre for such university by the state government so that the students get a fair chance to competition and opportunity as those students from the rest of India. This year, because of the pandemic, a test centre for Manipur is needed more than ever.
We would like to appeal to our Honourable State Education Minister, Mr. Thokchom Radheshyam Singh and the concerned authorities to kindly look into this matter urgently and act on it to deliver justice and fairness to the aspiring students of Manipur.
