Cachar fails to meet fish target
The Telegraph | Silchar, July 13:
Fishermen in Cachar have failed to meet the target of fish production this fiscal.
The district fisheries development said 1.5 lakh fishermen were able to produce only 21,500 tonnes of fish from the different waterbodies, including the Barak, the second biggest river in the Northeast, as against the annual demand, estimated at 36,000 tonnes.
The rohu fish from the Barak sells for Rs 700 a kg on an average, while other delicacies such as pabda and tangra sell for about Rs 800 a kg, thus punching a big hole in the pockets of the majority of fish-eating Bengali population.
