Bleeding inside Brain treated successfully at SKY Hospital
For the first time in Manipur, a patient who bled inside his brain was successfully treated without brain surgery at SKY Hospital. Mr.Lallien, 55 years old man, resident of Churachandpur District developed sudden onset headache and collapse while hunting on 4th October, 2018. Emergency CT scan of brain detected a large intracranial subarachnoidhaemorrhage (bleeding inside the brain).
Subsequent MRI Angiogram showed bleeding from aneurysm (arterial dilatation) of brain artery (ACOM). Patients with such emergency condition do not usually survive without treatment, traditionally “brain surgery”. Mr.Lallien’s family opted for non-surgical treatment strategy which is called “ENDOVASCULAR COIL EMBOLISATION OF THE BLEEDING ARTERIAL ANEURYSM”.
Specialised confirmatory diagnostic procedure called Digital Subtraction Angiogram (DSA) performed at SKY Hospital confirmed the diagnosis that this patient bled from aneurysm of the Anterior Communicating Artery (ACOM) of the blood circulation of the brain called Circle of Willis. The size of the aneurysm was 6 mm x 8 mm and was directed inferiorly from the ACOM.
Under General Anaesthesia, endovascular balloon assisted metallic coils (Four in number) were inserted into the carotid artery (artery of the neck) and into the brain via the right groin through the right femoral artery, using a special large and long carotid sheath. Under the high resolution Cath Lab Machine of SKY Hospital, the metallic coils were deployed one by one at the site of aneurysmal bleeding after protecting the neck of the aneurysm with 4 mm x 7 mm hyper-complaint balloon.
The procedure was performed on 9th October, 2018. The procedure started at 10:20 am and finished at 7:30 pm. It was successfully completed without any complication. The patient started eating, drinking and talking 19 hours after the procedure. He started walking on Day 3 of the Cerebral Endovascular Coil Embolism and was discharged home on Day 4 after the procedure.
Dr. Lairikyengbam Shyamkishore, Chairman of the SKY Hospital expressed his happiness and satisfaction on the successful first time non-operative treatment of such life threatening acute intracranial bleed (Acute subarachnoidhaemorrhage) in Manipur, thereby saving more lives. He also appealed to the people to be vigilant and aware of symptom such as sudden onset headache and collapse and availability of such non-surgical brain-care services 24 hour a day at SKY Hospital.
