Bill for HCs in 3 NE states tabled in Parliament

Union home minister P Chidambaram on Thursday introduced the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) and Other Related Laws ( Amendment) Bill, 2012 in the Lok Sabha, paving the way for creation of separate high courts in Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur. The Bill now proposed to amend the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971 with the objective of setting up separate high courts for the three states which now have benches u nder the Gauhati High Court, Chidambaram said.
“This will provide easy access, speedy and cost effective justice for the people of those states and also to make the consequential amendments in other related laws,” the Home Minister added. Clause 4 of the Bill seeks to amend section 28 of the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971 which says that the expenditure on setting up of separate high courts including recurring expenditure will be borne by the respective state government.
Till date, all the seven Northeastern states come under the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court with separate benches in the respective state capitals
