Bean there, gone away
Jayashree Nandi | Times News Network | The Crest Mumbai| Saturday, January 14, 2012, Mumbai:
Lakshmi sana who sells at the leikai bazaar holds three yongchak sticks (tree beans) and calls out to customers. Just three sticks for a whopping Rs 100. Yongchak is irreplaceble in traditional Manipuri salad recipes like iromba and singju.
"We cannot do away with iromba. Its just like asking Bengalis not to eat fish. Manipuris loves yongchak but because the trees are dying the price of the beans has multiplied. Many are finding it a lucrative option to plant yongchak trees becuase it will give them great returns in the future."
"There are no clear scientific explanations for why yongchak trees are dying. The shortage will impact not just market rates of the beans but also the food habits of the region. It is also an indicator of how the ecological balance of the region is crumbling."
"One of our studies shows the degradation of forests in Manipur is very high. Degraded forests are more prone to the impact of climate change. This degradation is mainly due to ocer-extraction and poor management."
