BJP for safeguarding Manipur's territorial integrity
Times of India | TNN | Jan 11, 2012, 10.38AM IST
The opposition BJP, which suffered a humiliating defeat in the last Manipur assembly polls, has promised to uphold the state's territorial integrity and improve law and order so that the controversial Armed Forces' Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is not required.
Though BJP is not a member of the grand pre-poll alliance of the opposition fronts, the saffron party and regional Manipur People's Party (MPP) have shared seats in some constituencies, including Thoubal, the turf of chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
The 34-point manifesto of the saffron party covers all major issues besetting Manipur ranging from territorial integrity and AFSPA to insurgency and from Tipaimukh dam to protection of religious places and promotion of tourism.
On the controversial military law, the manifesto said BJP "will bring law and order in such a situation where AFSPA, 1958 is not required and that any human rights violation will not be tolerated.
