BJP feasting on disunity of opposition parties
- The People's Chronicle Editorial :: March 29, 2023 -
AS long as there is a BJP-led government at the centre, there is no doubt that the party's strength and aura in Manipur as well as in the north-eastern states would grow.
Taking into account of Manipur's electoral politics history, it could be safely stated that majority of the elected people's representatives would, literally, dance as per the music played in New Delhi as is evident from the post-poll merger of five Janata Dal-United MLAs to the BJP and all others barring Congress legislators backing the government headed by the saffron party.
Similarity, of the eight states in the northeast, five are presently ruled by the BJP and three by regional parties which are also partners of the North East Democratic Alliance, a political entity orchestrated by the BJP.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi remaining as the undisputed leader of the NDA alliance unlike the opposition parties which are unable to shed away their differences, considered essential to take on the present regime, it is obvious that the prevailing positive vibe would be attractive to many a political wannabees.
Feasting on the fractious opposition, the BJP is already setting sight to retaining power after the 2024 parliamentary elections as it evident from party's central leaders holding regular strategic meetings at the national and regional level and issuing advisories to the state units to spread the message that it is committed to development of all strata of the society.
From the states' perspective, the party wouldn't face any serious issue or dissent at-least for the Lok Sabha but the same cannot be guaranteed when it comes to assembly polls.
That the party is determined to keep the house in order has been made crystal clear by agriculture minister Biswajit's clarion call to participants of a three-day residential training camp for volunteers of BJP Kisan Morcha for strengthening the party's unity.
While there would be no shortage of candidate aspirants for either parliamentary elections or assembly polls, the role and integrity of party's workers working at the ground level would be most crucial in deciding fate of the candidates.
Compared to the non-NDA parties whose leaders' endeavour for a consensus remains elusive, the BJP has been cruising along comfortably and foraying into hitherto uncharted territories, such as the southern states.
Moreover, all leaders of state or national stature are making it a point to project PM Modi as the architect of socio-economic changes thereby instilling positive vibe among the party workers.
Along with the PM's growing stature and reckoning as one of the global leaders, regardless of the opposition parties branding him as crony capitalist, there is no doubt that the party's popularity and profile in the region too has been growing.
In such a scenario, it is but natural for seasoned as well as rookie politicians to opt for the BJP if given a choice.
However, the party would inevitably face problem when assembly election approaches as there would be multiple ticket seekers for which the party leaders would have to make a choice from among the candidates it fielded in the last election and MLAs who embraced the BJP ideology only after winning the polls.
