Former BJP President Nitin Gadkari felicitated Mary Kom with the ONE India award. Speaking on the occasion he said several activists were working in the north east in adverse conditions. "On the one side is Bangladesh where people cross the border with impunity, foreigners are encroaching our North East land, they have entered the voters' list and are now landowners... this is creating all kinds of tension in the area", he said.
The ONE India Award takes its award from the acronym of Our North East. This award is given to a personality from North East who has contributed to India's glory, integrity and development. MC Mary Kom is the fourth recipient of the award.
Sunil Deodhar convenor of My Home India (MHI) highlighted the challenges in Manipur, plagued by separatist movements, road blockades and shortages of basic necessities. 'Overcoming these challenges Mary Kom was able to win five world championships and a bronze medal in women's boxing at the Olympics', Deodhar said.
Deodhar who has worked in the North East for several years thanked former BJP President Nitin Gadkari, who initiated a vision document on the problems of the region. Deodhar in fact prepared a report of the region which was then presented to the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
Ashish Shelar, BJP President for Mumbai said that even though we might be educated we need to be enlightened on the issues of North East India. He pointed out the Rs 20,000 crore of central funds are earmarked for North East but there is no visible development in the region.
Congratulating MHI on the occasion he said that it is programmes like these that contribute to national integration.
My Home India is a people's initiative working toward strengthening the unity and integrity of the country. Since inception it has been focusing on the much neglected eight North East states of the country. Its motive is to emotionally integrate the people of Rest of India to North East. Besides lending a helping hand in times of their need My Home India is also connecting them with local families and providing them with a feeling of home away from home.
