Shree Athokpam Tomchou : Sahityabhusan 2017 : Manipuri literature

Shree Athokpam Tomchou is born on 3rd May, 1944 at Konjeng Leikai, Imphal West.
Born to Athokpam Tolamu Singh and Athokpam Ongbi Mangolnganbi Devi, Athokpam Tomchou was fond of writing short stories and poems since his school days.
When he was a student of 16 years, his debut story, ‘Eteima’ was staged for the first time at Aryan Theatre in 1960.
When Athokpam Tomchou was studying at Imphal College, he build up a strong bond with his teacher, the famous playwright GC Tongbra. Under the guidance of Oja GC Tongbra, Athokpam Tomchou wrote many courtyard plays (Sumang Leela) and dramas.
Athokpam Tomchou wrote more than 200 dramas and courtyard plays.
Moreover, he authored 8 books, namely-
Promotion (1974),
Nungshiba Thiba (1978),
Sambal (1976),
Jali Mee (1976),
Bus Stop (1975),
Meiri (1987),
Mingsel (1989), and
Epom Babu gi Punshi amasung Thabak sing (2016).
Many of his plays were awarded Best script and Second Best script. And AIR Imphal has aired 17 plays written by him.
In recognition of his immense contribution in the field of Manipuri drama and Courtyard Plays- Theatre Centre, Manipur conferred upon him the Theatre Centre Award, 2012; Writer’s Forum Imphal awarded him with Khundongbam Brojendro Ningsing Award, 2011; and other awards like A Nabakishore Sharma Memorial Award, 2016 by Langmeidong Dramatic Union and Manipuri State Sumang Leela Council conferred him with Sumang Leela Award, 2016.
In recognition of his contribution in the field of Manipuri literature, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal, on their 82nd Annual General Body Meeting, conferred him with ‘Sahityabhusan’.
