At the Heart of Springtime
K. Radhakumar *
I did not come here
As a poet.
Despite my fifty years in this place
I am still the new kid on the block.
I am leaving any moment now
As one pregnant with unfathomable wonder
Always discovering something new
On the eastern horizon.
Breakfast moneymaking lunch
A shot of whiskey in the evening
Sex once in a while
The sunrise and the sunset
A mundane sight!
I lead a pretty mundane existence.
My daily routine
From 6 am to 6 pm
The birth to death routine
How my soul cries
For a break from routine!
Ah, not today!
Today is fine.
Oh, how wonderful!
Something new!
Always something new!
Today the sun rises
As if it were the first day in one's life
Softly smiling like a lady
Who has left behind her girlhood
A painful experience a moment ago
And now a sweet memory
When she is adorned
With the crown of womanhood.
When the sun rises
The eastern horizon is a mass of colour
The pinks and the yellows
With light blues in the background.
The flowers are swaying in the light breeze
And birds are flying in the sky.
I am in my element
As I set about
The task of living my life
One day at a time.
Write your poem, poet.
Sing your song
Without reservation
And at the top of your voice.
I have spent five decades of blissful existence
And have no qualms about taking a rest.
