Army act extended by six months
The Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, May 22 ():
The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) will continue to be in force in most parts of Manipur for another six months after the Nongthombam Biren Singh cabinet last night extended the disturbed area status of the state.
The decision to extend the army act came at a time when the people of the state, particularly human rights groups, have been demanding that the act be repealed. The army act was enforced in the whole of Manipur in 1980 when armed militancy was seriously affecting the law and order situation in the state.
