Another repoll likely in Manipur
Iboyaima Laithangbam | Imphal, February 15, 2012:
Manipur, where re-election was held in 34 stations, is likely to witness repoll again in 100 stations as three special observers of the Election Commission have found discrepancies and electoral malpractices during photo comparisons.
Observers Sunil Gupta, D.K. Pandey and Gaurav Dwividi, submitted a confidential report to the EC on Tuesday. Chief Electoral Officer P.C. Lawmkunga says he is waiting for the EC's instructions.
Mr. Lawmkunga had received 35 complaints of malpractices in 177 stations, spread over 13 Assembly constituencies, during the January 28 elections.
During their two-day stay here, the observers compared the photographs of voters taken at the time of voting with those in the Elector's Photo Identity Cards. A majority of the EPICs had different photos as men, instead of women, were photographed at the time of voting, and vice versa. Several Muslim men used burka to masquerade as women in Muslim dominated polling stations.
Reacting to a news report that the TMC was likely to join hands with the People's Democratic Front, formed by five non-Congress parties with a view to wresting power from the Congress, the functionary said an agreement was yet to be reached with the PDF.
The Bharatiya Janata Party says it will support a non-Congress Ministry which, it believes, is likely to be formed in the State.
Talking to journalists here on Tuesday, State vice-president S.Tiken said the party was hopeful of winning five of the 19 seats it contested for the 60-member House. It is, however, not a member of the pre-poll alliance of PDF. In the last elections, the BJP failed to win any seat.
Referring to the photo comparison done by the EC observers, Mr. Tiken said the party had sent a memorandum to the Commission, urging it to reject ballots polled in stations where malpractices occurred.
