NE Dams Consultation III by NEPA at Pasighat, East Siang, Arunachal Pradesh
- From 30 April till 2 May 2010 -
The Northeast Peoples Alliance (NEPA) in partnership with various grassroots movements in the Northeast struggling daily to tackle the challenges posed to the survival and livelihood of the indigenous peoples by dams, both proposed and at various stages of execution will like to call for a definitive Consultation on dams from 30 April – 2 May 2010 at Pasighat, East Siang, Arunachal Pradesh.
The three days consultation has been necessitated five years after the last meeting ever held on dams in the Northeast, not so much as a result of the gap in conducting a meeting of similar scope and reach, but because of the pressing need of the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in the northeast to take stock of the latest developments, destructions, experiences and strategies in the quest by governments and corporations’ alike to seize the flow of the pristine rivers in the northeast to facilitate the ever-growing rapacity of the industrial houses.
The Consultation has also been informed by the growing confidence of the IPs of the Northeast in taking ownership and giving direction of and to their own struggles. The networks in the northeast have grown from strength to strength as the diverse communities in the northeast recognizes the importance of working together and also the fact that the challenges facing all of them are common and therefore the pertinence of coming together to face the challenges.
The Consultation will be unique in the sense that there will be prioritization of sharing of experiences and the drawing of strategies from the local experiences. The sessions in the Consultation will be conducted by the participants themselves and will focus on identifying the commonalities and devising best strategies based on our varied experiences, knowledge and wisdom.
Some main objectives of the consultation include:
1. Stock taking on dams in the region
2. Experience sharing of struggles, displacement, success and failures
3. Awareness and capacity building for participants
4. Build North East solidarity
Please find an Information Sheet attached ( PDF 14 KB) for more information and on how to participate in the consultation.
Thanks,
ram
