Re:PLAY: Internesenal Dokumentari Kumhei, Manipur's first international documentary festival, will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy from June 9-13, 2010. Founded with the initiative and support of His Excellency, Shri Gurbachan Jagat, Governor of Manipur, Re:Play will feature selections from distinguished international film festivals selected by Festival Director L. Somi Roy. They include Film South Asia from Kathmandu, Dance on Camera Festival in New York, the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival and the New York African Film Festival.
The festival will open with a screening of "Dancing Across Borders", directed by Anne Bass, an American enthusiast and supporter of ballet who discovered Sokvannara Sar (Sy) a young and gifted dancer living with his family in Cambodia and then initiated the Khmer Dance Project. The 22 international documentaries, from over 14 countries, selected from these festivals will pay special attention to sports and performance, in recognition of Manipur's distinction in these fields.
There will be screenings and panel discussions called Talk Doc on documentary filmmaking in Manipur, developed in partnership with local media organizations. They include Cine Artists and Technicians Association; Doordarshan Kendra, Imphal; Effective Television; Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy; Manipur Film Critics and Journalists Association; Film Forum; Manipur Film Development Corporation; EMMRC, Manipur University and Mayum Networks.
A special highlight of the upcoming festival is these media organizations' special tribute evening to Aribam Syam Sharma, Manipur's pioneer documentary filmmaker who has made over 25 documentaries on subjects ranging from performing arts to environment and ethnography.
Re:Play will also feature a 3-part workshop for dancers and filmmakers conducted by Nan Melville, a South African photographer and videographer based in New York.
Re:Play is also sponsored in part by the Manipur Film Development Corporation and the Department of Arts & Culture, Government of Manipur. Venue and hotel sponsorship have been extended by the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy and The Classic Hotel.
Single tickets to Re:Play screenings are Rs. 25 per program; Rs.10 for students with current, valid Student ID. Registration for Talk Doc is Rs.100 for all four panel discussions. The Governor's Opening and Tribute events are by invitation only. The workshop sessions are limited to a small class and are closed, except to participants selected by our Partner Organizations.
