Alienation behind racial profiling of NE folks – (II)
Seven Sisters Post | Aryamitra Kar
It is alleged that the police and administration in metro cities are biased against people from the Northeast. After the death of Richard Loitam, authorities of the college in which he studied had given different interpretations of the incident at different points of time ranging from gang war to drug overdose. The police are being accused of showing a lackadaisical attitude in the case. Such an attitude on part of the administration is extremely demoralising.
There may be a thousand legislations for the protection of the people from the Northeast, but if the enforcers themselves are not sensitised to the people’s concerns and held accountable for their actions, the ground situation is not go- ing to improve. Equally demeaning and condemnable are the people who indulge in such acts like calling the Northeasterners by derogatory names, indulge in racial profiling and often subject them to physical assaults and other forms of harassments. Strict action should be taken against such people to send out a strong message to the society and deter the occurrence of such racially-motivated crimes.
