A dream with wheels and bamboo frame
The Telegraph | Imphal, April 1:
At least two to three different designs would be manufactured or assembled during the workshop and we will have a test ride at the end of the workshop, South Asia Bamboo Foundation executive director Salam Kamesh said.
For the time being, MCC is using a Tripura-based bamboo species thyrsostachys oliveri, which is used in making fishing rods and javelins. It will later be replaced by another species available in Manipur and locally known as Khok.
Kamesh said Manipur was one of the states in India where bicycles were very popular. Moreover, he said, India exported bicycles in bulk to neighbouring Myanmar. If bamboo bicycles could be produced in bulk in Manipur, there is potential of finding markets not only in India but also abroad, Kamesh, who would be attending the World Bamboo Congress, beginning April 10 in Belgium, added.
