A Song for Lucy
H Ranjita *
She came from far, far mountain,
Leaving behind her beloved Friends and Family
Behind the village road that lays like a lazy snake
Just to be with the man she loves so dearly,
Marrying not only the man of her choice
But also his culture and religion with no choice.
Her days start before the sun rises
With endless house-hold chores -
Cooking, cleaning, washing, watering.
And her days end after the sun sets,
Looking after the family,
Taking care of everyone.
She forgets how she looks like.
No time for herself to take care,
No one for her to take care.
One thing she does for herself
Every night before going to bed is
To look up at the heavily jewelled sky
For some moments from her closing window,
Remembering her home in the far, far mountain
Missing those lovely view from her open window,
Thinking of those lovely days that are no more...
