A Garland of Flowers and a Row of People
K. Padmakumar *
These humans or puppets spring to their feet
By turning the knob of a watch,
These look like hyacinths floating on water
The lost with no future.
On seeing human beings roped and carried away
Like a calf is pulled away from its milk
By a length of rope, an old man says,
'Why blow smoke up granny's ass
For only flowers threaded into a garland look beautiful,
Only demons wear a garland of human beings.'
(Translated from the poet's Manipuri poem 'Lei Pareng Mi Pareng' by K Radhakumar.)
