2nd Online Career counseling in IT

KEN has conducted its 2nd in the series of online career counseling in IT on July 19, 2020
Knowledge Exchange Network, Manipur (KEN Manipur is a voluntary organization collectively run by Manipuri professionals across the world, based at Boston, USA. KEN's sole aim is to create employment opportunities in Manipur through knowledge transfer and skilling youth by synergizing the local need and best means available in the world.
The event started with a welcome Address by RK Herojit, KEN President encouraging all the students who attended the event and highlighted the valuable works done by KEN so far in Manipur. Details can be found at http://kenmanipur.org/activity/.
Further Dr Jayanta Yumnam, KEN General Secretary explained the Mission and Vision of KEN to the participants (http://kenmanipur.org/aim-and-objective/)
The IT career counselling was given by Lakshmikanta Laikangbam , the Founder and President of Numit Technologies LLC, an IT Consulting Company headquartered in USA. He is also a founding member of KEN.
He guided the participants through detailed explanation of IT and its origin covering a wide range of opportunities awaiting at the horizon for the youngsters, for now and for the future. He emphasized on the need of IT study to ultimately generate income for living either via a job or other paid works, may be IT business.
Some of the key counseling points were:
1. Qualification to become an IT Professional
2. History of Computer (from past to present)
3. Difference between IT Product and IT Services Companies
4. IT Infrastructure – High level roles
o System Administrator (Unix, Linux, Windows etc.)
o Application Administrator (JBOSS, Tomcat, IBM WebSphere etc.)
o Network Engineer
o Storage Engineer
5. Systems development life cycle (SDLC) - High level roles
o Program/Project Manager
o Business Analyst (Requirement, User Acceptance testing etc.)
o Programmer (Java, DotNet, Python etc.)
o Database Administrator (Oracle, MS SQL, MongoDB etc.)
o Quality Assurance (Functional testing, Performance testing etc.)

The presentation gave a clear picture to the students on what type of roles they would be playing once they start to work in a company. He also encouraged the students to start thinking in advance about what role they would prefer so that they could learn them much ahead of others. This would give them the core competence needed in landing a better opportunity, or else they might be randomly assigned to a role which they might not like by the company.
An interactive Question & Answer session was conducted after the presentation.
Many best practices were shared by Bishwajit Okram [Financial Controller, a Fellow of Certified Chartered Accountants UK, CPA- Australia] and Ajith Thokchom [IT Professional, USA].
More than 30 students from different parts of India attended the event.
S Alian Vaiphei, KEN Vice President gave the Vote of thanks at the end of the event. He encouraged the students to work very hard to pursue their dream career.
