The Innovative Youth Society in collaboration with Manipur Cycle Club humbly request to cover both day of the 1st Nambul River Revival Conference, 2014 to be held on 13th and 14th of November, 2014 Friday both beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The Nambul River Revival Conference is organized under the initiative of the Innovative Youth Society’s Save Nambul Campaign of the fifth edition of CHINJAK FESTIVAL(5)-INTERNATIONAL, 2014 which is being held from 6-16 November, 2014 at the River Bank of Nambul at PISUM NINGOM LEIKAI YLL GROUND, IMPHAL WEST, MANIPUR.

As such initiative demands an important role to be played by the Civil Societies, Social Worker, Nambul River effected Leikai Clubs, Organizations and Ima Meira Paibis with Press Media and concerned government departments; We are therefore requesting you on behalf of all the volunteers to cover the conference and give all possible cooperation and make our initiative to save the Nambul River for future generations and to be saved from polluting further and reviving it.

Let Us Save Our Nambul

NAMBUL RIVER originates from Litan Vaiphei of Kanghcup hill range. This important river passes through the densely populated Imphal valley, along a stretch of more than ten kilometers before finally flowing into the largest fresh water lake in the Northeast – the Loktak Lake under Bishnupur district. Over the years, the river has been reduced almost into a drain, chocked with filth and waste products. Urban human activities like dumping garbage and draining sewerages directly into the river have not only defiled its beauty, but have rendered the water unusable, and also making it a source of different kinds of diseases.

Nambul’s riverbed has not been dredged since a long period of time, thereby decreasing the depth of the river. Some of the waste products have even remained coagulated near the river banks. This has severely affected the ecological health of the river and as well as the Loktak Lake, because of which various aquatic organisms have become extinct, particularly indigenous fishes found abundantly during earlier days.

Nambul River gets more contaminated when it reaches Samushang area, before passing through densely populated areas like Naoremthong, Bijoy Govinda Mamang Leikai, Maharani Thong, Wahengbam Leikai, Koukhulong, Keishamthong and so on, wherefrom the river gets heavily contaminated from careless human activities. The riverbanks of these areas have also become unproductive because of the disturbed ecological phenomenon.

At this backdrop, the Innovative Youth Society, IYS strongly feels that it is never too late to initiate a modest effort to save the Nambul River from further degradation. In this regard, the IYS in its 5th edition of Chinjaak Festival International, which is to be held from November 6 – 16, 2014 at Pishum Ningombam Leikai, YLL Ground Imphal, will accentuate the message of saving the Nambul. IYS will seek cooperation and share knowledge with concerned departments of the state government, clubs and organisations, Meira Paibees and concerned citizens, in its initiative to revive the Nambul.
