11th Ranbir Thouna Live On Stage, 'SAVE LOKTAK, OUR LIFE'

Tamna Sangai, a non-profit organisation of Manipur, in association with FIDAM, Manipuri Basti Coordination Committee and Manipuri Basti Meira-Paibi Women Association, Guwahati, is organising the 11th Ranbir Thouna Live On Stage, 'SAVE LOKTAK, OUR LIFE', a musical campaign event to save endangered Loktak Lake of Manipur at Guwahati Medical College Auditorium, Bhangagarh on the 5th May 2013 at 4.30 pm. The event is part of Tamna Sangai's campaign named 'Save Loktak, Our Life', which has been carried out since April 2009. The campaign is towards protecting and saving Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Eastern India.
The Loktak Lake, located at Moirang in Manipur, played an important role in the socio-culture and economic life of Manipur. It serves as source of hydro-power, irrigation, drinking water, besides being a source of livelihood of thousands fisherman. Considering the ecological status and its bio-diversity, the lake was declared as one of the seven Ramsar sites of international importance. The Lake's rich biological diversity comprises 233 species of aquatic life forms, 116 species. The lake is also home of Sangai, an endemic, rare and endangered Brow-antlered deer found only in the marshy wetland in Keibul Lamjao located in the southern parts of the Loktak Lake.
In recent decades, the Lake has been facing serious problems due to loss of vegetal cover and construction of Ithai barrage, deforestation etc. All these have accelerated soil erosion and siltation resulting into ecological instability of the Lake.
Save loktak, Our Life Campaign is an effort to draw attention of the people of North East of India and India about the rich legacy of the Loktak Lake, its socio-cultural links with the people in Manipur and its present dire situation. It is also to call upon people who care environment towards conserving the Loktak Lake and other natural lakes.
Tamna Saigai has been contributing towards the promotion of art and culture and environment in the state of Manipur and North East Region. Ranbir Thouna, a singer, composer, director of Manipuri music and the president of Tamna Sanggai took up the Campaign and used music as the medium. Under this campaign, musical and other events were organized at Delhi, Bangalore, Manipur since start of the campaign. The organisers invite all to be part of the event and show solidarity towards the initiative to Save Loktak.
