Cannot accept bill, says Ibobi
The Telegraph | Guwahati, Oct. 16:
Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh today said he cannot accept the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. "We cannot accept it," Ibobi Singh told the media here this evening after inaugurating Manipur Bhawan constructed at a cost of Rs 15.25 crore in the Bora Service area in the city.
Ibobi Singh's statement, however, has come at a time the BJP-led government in Assam is supporting the bill despite widespread protests from various organisations and individuals.
The bill will amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, to make migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
