Importance of preserving ozone layer stressed on World Ozone Day

Imphal/Bishnupur, September 16 2023: As observed across the globe, Bhairodan Maxwell Hindi High School, Imphal West in collaboration with Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur today observed World Ozone Day at the school premises under the theme, "Fixing the Ozone Layer and Reducing Climate Change" .

The teaching, non-teaching staff as well as students participated in the event.

An extempore speech competition along with a tree plantation programme was also conducted.

Speaking on the occasion, Tanuja Khumukcham, Assistant Teacher & in-charge of Nongin Youth and Eco Club, spoke on the importance of observing the day and how students can play an important role in preserving it for the generations to come.

Importance of preserving ozone layer stressed on World Ozone Day

She elaborated on how the ozone layer is becoming thinner due to carbon emission or emission of gases, such as CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons), halogenated hydrocarbons, methyl bromide, nitrous oxide, etc.

She highlighted the roles of a responsible citizen in protecting the ozone layer, which is also a provision under the Constitution of India that provides for protection and improvement of the environment.

The observation concluded with distributions of prizes to the students who participated in the extempore speech competition as a token of appreciation and encouragement to fight climate change and save Ozone layer for the future generations.

Moreover, World Ozone Day was also celebrated today at Heingang High School, Heingang.

It was attended by Dr Chingakham Raghumani Singh, guest faculty Department of Forestry & Environmental Science, Manipur University; Nongthombam Sudhir chandra, Headmaster, Heingang High School and Moirangthem Dhaneswori Devi, AGT, senior most teacher, Heingang High School as presidium members, said a release.

During the event, students were made aware about the utility and preservation of Ozone Layer in the atmosphere.

Moirang College also observed the World Ozone Day 2023 today at the college multipurpose hall.

A press release by the college informed that the observance was organised by the Science Club of the College attended by the Principal of the College Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh; Nodal Officer, Administration N Joy Singh and the convener of the Science Club, Th Surchandra as the presidium members.

Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology N Soni Meitei and Assistant Professor of Environmental Science Dr N Ranita spoke as the resource persons.

Ex-tempore and quiz competitions for the students were the main events of the observance.

Bidyapati Pukhrambam of BSc 1st year Chemistry Hons won the first position in the extempore competition while Ahanthem Jateshwori Devi of BA 2nd year Political Science Hons and Ningthoujam Bikash BA 2nd Year Geography Hons secured the second and third positions respectively.

For the quiz competition, the Thangjing Team consisting of the BSc first semester students emerged as the winner while the Khoirentak Team of BSc second year students were the runners up.
